Why you need it

No course, no Green Card

Since the Green Labourer Card replaced the Construction Site Operative card in 2014, every applicant has needed a Level 1 health and safety qualification. It shows you have the basic safety knowledge expected of anyone working on a UK construction site.

To apply for the card you will need two documents: your course certificate and your CITB Health, Safety and Environment test score report.

Do I need this course for a CSCS Green Card?

Yes. The Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment, or a CSCS-approved alternative, is required for every Green Labourer Card application.

Who is the course for?

Labourers and people starting out in construction who need a CSCS Green Labourer Card to work on UK sites.

What is the difference between this course and the CITB test?

The course teaches you how to work safely on site. The CITB Health, Safety and Environment test checks that knowledge. You need to pass both before you can apply for a Green Card.

How long does the online course take?

Most people finish in under 4 hours. You can pause and pick up where you left off at any time.

Can I do the course on my phone?

You can work through the modules on your phone. The final exam needs a laptop or PC with a webcam and Google Chrome.

Does the qualification expire?

No. Once you have the Level 1 Award, it stays valid. You will not need to retake it when you renew your Green Card.

When will I get my certificate?

Certificates are issued by the awarding body after you pass the exam. Allow up to 7 to 10 days for it to arrive.

Can I start work as soon as I pass?

Not yet. You also need to pass the CITB Operatives test and receive your CSCS Green Card before working on sites that require one.

Is there a free course that counts?

No. Free health and safety material can help you revise, but only a recognised qualification counts towards a Green Card application.
